Zoom G1 Four presets and settings

Compact floor unit with two footswitches and up to five effects per patch, where an amp and a cabinet are effects like any other, in 50 patches. The G1X Four is the same unit with an expression pedal.

How do you dial in a specific tone on a Zoom G1 Four?

A multi-effects unit gives you the whole chain in one box, which means the order of the blocks is as much of the answer as the values inside them. Settings for the Zoom G1 Four name the amp model, the block order and the parameters together, rather than handing you numbers with no chain to put them in.

Name the song you are chasing and Tonelify returns the settings for this exact multi-effects unit, not the settings the original artist used. Those are two different things: the recording was made on gear most players do not own.

Starting settings on the Zoom G1 Four

Values as the unit's screen shows them, on its own scale; each drawn knob shows that value's share of the range. They are where to begin, not Zoom's numbers: pick the amp model first, then move one control at a time from here.

Clean

FD TWNR, Zoom's model of the Fender '65 Twin Reverb, followed by the FD2x12 cabinet, which Zoom models on the Twin's own cabinet. Gain 25, Bass 50, MID 50, Treble 60, BRGHT on: Zoom notes the bright switch is most noticeable at lower gain. MATCH30, a Matchless DC-30, is the other clean in the list.

Edge of breakup and blues

FD DLXR, Zoom's model of the Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb, with the FD-DX1x12 cabinet. Gain 45, Bass 50, Treble 55. Like the amp it models, it has no Middle control. UK 30A, which Zoom describes as an early class A British combo, has a Cut control in place of Middle as well.

Classic rock

MS 800, Zoom's model of a Marshall JCM800 2203, with the MS4x12 cabinet. Input HI, Gain 60, Bass 50, MID 65, Treble 60, PRSNC 50. Keep the mids up: rock guitar sits in the midrange. MS 1959 models the 1959 Super Lead 100 and has two input gains, Input1 and Input2, in place of one Gain.

Metal

Recti ORG, Zoom's model of the Orange channel of a MESA/Boogie Dual Rectifier, with Mode on MDRN. Gain 70, Bass 55, MID 45, Treble 60, PRSNC 50. A metal patch fits the five slots as noise reduction, drive, amp, cabinet and one spare: ZNR, Zoom's noise reduction, first, then TS Drive (Zoom: a simulation of the Ibanez TS808) with its gain low before the amp, and the amp's Gain a step lower. DZ DRV, channel 2 of a Diezel Herbert, is the other high-gain choice.

ZNR, TS Drive, amp and cabinet use four of the five slots.

Lead

Start from the rhythm patch and use the spare slot for a delay. In STOMP mode the footswitches turn effects on and off instead of changing patch, so a boost or a delay for the solo is one press away. The mode switch cycles through MEMORY, STOMP and EDIT.

Zoom G1 Four questions

What amps are in the Zoom G1 Four?

Zoom's effect list has 16 amp models: MS 800 (Marshall JCM800 2203), MS 1959 (Marshall 1959 Super Lead 100), MS 45os (Marshall JTM 45 Offset), FD TWNR (Fender '65 Twin Reverb), FD B-MAN ('59 Bassman), FD DLXR ('65 Deluxe Reverb), FD MASTER (Fender ToneMaster, B channel), UK 30A (an early class A British combo), BG MK1 and BG MK3 (MESA/Boogie Mark I and Mark III), XtasyBlue (Bogner Ecstasy, Blue channel), HW 100 (Hiwatt Custom 100), Recti ORG (Dual Rectifier, Orange channel), ORG120 (Orange Graphic120), DZ DRV (Diezel Herbert, channel 2) and MATCH30 (Matchless DC-30). MS 45os, FD MASTER and BG MK3 are marked as Guitar Lab additional effects, the ones added from a computer with Zoom's free Guitar Lab app.

How many effects can the G1 Four use at once?

Five per patch, in series from 1 to 5, and an amp and a cabinet each take one of the five. If a patch asks for more processing than the unit has, PROCESS OVERFLOW appears and that effect is bypassed. Patches are stored ten to a bank in five banks, 50 in all.

What is the difference between the Zoom G1 Four and the G1X Four?

The G1X Four adds an expression pedal, with a pedal switch, that controls effects from the PEDAL category. The effects, patches, looper and rhythms are the same. The G1X Four is 216 mm wide and weighs 610 g, against 130 mm and 340 g for the G1 Four.

Do you need the cabinet effect with headphones on the G1 Four?

Yes. Zoom's patch list says to turn on the MIC parameter of the cabinet effect when you use headphones. With MIC off, Zoom says the cabinet's tone is optimised for using amp modelling through a guitar amp; with it on, a balance control mixes a Shure SM57 and a Sennheiser MD421.

Can the Zoom G1 Four run on batteries?

Yes. Four AA batteries give about 18 hours of continuous use with alkalines and the backlight off, by Zoom's figure. It also runs from Zoom's AD-16 adaptor or from USB power, such as a mobile battery.

How long is the looper on the G1 Four?

Up to 30 seconds, and it can sync with the rhythm patterns. Since firmware 2.00, which Zoom released in November 2019, the looper can sit before or after the effects; before them, you can keep changing the sound of a loop you have already recorded.

What are the best Zoom G1 Four settings for metal?

Recti ORG in MDRN mode, Gain 70, Bass 55, MID 45, Treble 60 and PRSNC 50, with ZNR, TS Drive and a cabinet in the other slots. These are starting points rather than Zoom's numbers. If it fizzes, lower Gain first and Treble second.

How do you build a patch on the Zoom G1 Four?

Pick the amp model first, then set its controls, then add the blocks in signal-chain order: drive before the amp, time and modulation after it. A patch built the other way around ends up compensating for the wrong stage. Tonelify returns the model, the order and the parameters together.

Does Tonelify support the Zoom G1 Four?

Yes. Name it in the tone matcher along with the song you are chasing and the settings come back adapted to it. Gear does not need to be in the catalog for a match to run.
