How do you dial in a specific tone on a Boss Katana Mini X?
Solid-state amps hold their voicing steady across the volume range, which makes the Boss Katana Mini X far more predictable to dial in than a valve amp and is exactly why some of the most aggressive rhythm tones ever recorded came off solid-state heads. The trade is headroom before the EQ starts to sound brittle, so on this amp the treble control does more damage than the gain control does.
Name the song you are chasing and Tonelify returns the settings for this exact guitar amp, not the settings the original artist used. Those are two different things: the recording was made on gear most players do not own.
Settings for this amp only ever use controls it actually has, because its front panel is stored in our gear database. You will not be told to set a knob that is not on the amp.
Starting settings on the Boss Katana Mini X
Positions on a 0 to 10 scale, with 5 at twelve o'clock. They are where to begin, not Boss's numbers: pick the amp type first, then move one control at a time from here.
Clean
Clean type with Variation off, Gain 2 to 3, Bass 5, Middle 5, Treble 6, and Rev/Dly at the start of the REV or SPRING range. Each effect knob picks the effect and its amount at once, and BOSS's manual says to set the amount within the range printed for each effect, so a little reverb means the start of the REV range, not the middle of the knob.
- Gain 2 to 3
- Bass 5
- Middle 5
- Treble 6
- Rev/Dly start of REV
Crunch and classic rock
Crunch type, Gain 5 to 6, Bass 5, Middle 6 to 7, Treble 6, Rev/Dly early in the REV range. Try the Variation button on and off and keep the one that suits your pickups.
- Gain 5 to 6
- Bass 5
- Middle 6 to 7
- Treble 6
- Rev/Dly early REV
Metal
Brown type, Gain 6 to 7, Bass 5, Middle 5, Treble 6 to 7, Rev/Dly low. BOSS describes Brown as a lead sound with an edge inherited from the BOSS Waza brown sound. There is no booster, so if it needs to be tighter, lower Gain a step and use a drive pedal in front rather than turning Gain up.
- Gain 6 to 7
- Bass 5
- Middle 5
- Treble 6 to 7
- Rev/Dly low
Lead
Brown or Crunch, with Middle one step higher than your rhythm sound and Rev/Dly about a third of the way into the DLY+REV range, which gives repeats and room at once.
- Rev/Dly a third into DLY+REV

What the Boss Katana Mini X panel means when you dial it in
10W through a 1x5". At that rating it is built for practice and small rooms rather than for keeping up with a drummer. There is no presence control on this panel, so everything above the treble band has to come from the treble control and the guitar's own tone knob. A setting copied from an amp with presence has to be rebalanced here. Drive and volume have separate knobs, so the amp can sound driven at a volume that is liveable. Where a tone sits between the two is part of the answer, not a detail. The selectable voicings are Brown, Crunch and Clean. Picking the voicing comes before the knob positions, because the same numbers land somewhere else on each one.
Boss Katana Mini X questions
What does the Variation button do on the Katana Mini X?
It switches the selected amp type to its second voicing. With the Type switch on Clean, BOSS says the variation suits acoustic-electric guitars or bass guitars, and tuning a bass also uses Clean with Variation on.
What effects does the Katana Mini X have?
Two knobs, each choosing the effect and how much of it at once. Mod/FX covers Chorus, Phaser, Tremolo, Touch Wah, Defretter, Synth and Octave. Rev/Dly covers Reverb, Spring reverb, Delay, and Delay plus Reverb. BOSS's manual says to set the amount within the range printed for each effect on the knob, and notes that the synth tracks one note at a time, so it works on single notes rather than chords.
How long does the Katana Mini X battery last?
About 10 hours of continuous use on its built-in Ni-MH battery, by BOSS's figure, and about 3 hours to charge over USB-C from a computer or a USB power adaptor rated 5 V, 2 A or more.
How do you connect Bluetooth on the Katana Mini X?
Hold the Tuner/Bluetooth button for at least three seconds, then pick KATANA-MINI X in your phone's Bluetooth list. It plays audio from the phone through the amp, to play along with. A short press of the same button is the tuner.
What are good Katana Mini X settings for metal?
Brown type, Gain 6 to 7, Bass 5, Middle 5, Treble 6 to 7 and Rev/Dly kept low. These are starting points rather than BOSS's numbers. With no booster on board, a drive pedal in front is the way to tighten it, with Gain a step lower.
Can you use headphones with the Katana Mini X?
Yes. The Phones/Rec jack works for headphones or for recording, it outputs in stereo, and plugging into it mutes the amp's speaker.
Does Tonelify support the Boss Katana Mini X?
Yes, and its front panel is stored, so settings only ever reference controls this guitar amp has: Gain, Type switch, Variation button, Volume, Bass, Middle, Treble, Mod/FX, Rev/Dly, Tuner button. You will not be told to set a knob that is not there.
