How do you dial in a specific tone on a Valeton GP-100?

A multi-effects unit gives you the whole chain in one box, which means the order of the blocks is as much of the answer as the values inside them. Settings for the Valeton GP-100 name the amp model, the block order and the parameters together, rather than handing you numbers with no chain to put them in.

Name the song you are chasing and Tonelify returns the settings for this exact multi-effects unit, not the settings the original artist used. Those are two different things: the recording was made on gear most players do not own.

Starting settings on the Valeton GP-100

Values as the unit's screen shows them, on its own scale; each drawn knob shows that value's share of the range. They are where to begin, not Valeton's numbers: pick the amp model first, then move one control at a time from here.

Clean

Dark Twin, which Valeton bases on the Fender '65 Twin Reverb. VOL 35, Bass 50, Middle 50, Treble 60, Bright off. On this model VOL is the preamp gain and Output is the loudness, so set the level with Output. Most GP-100 amp knobs run from 0 to 99. J-120 CL, based on the Jazz Chorus, is the other big clean.

Edge of breakup and blues

Foxy 30TB, Valeton's model of the VOX AC30HW Top Boost channel. VOL 45, Bass 50, Treble 55, Cut 30, Char on Cool. It has no Middle knob. Cut brightens the top as you turn it down, per Valeton, and Char picks between two gain ranges, Cool and Hot. Bellman 59B, the '59 Bassman's bright channel, is the Fender alternative.

Classic rock

UK 45, based on the Marshall JTM45's normal channel, or UK 50JP, the JMP50 with its inputs jumped. UK 45: VOL 60, Bass 50, Middle 65, Treble 60, PRES 50. Keep the mids up: rock guitar sits in the midrange, and scooping it is the usual reason a patch sounds thin next to a band.

Metal

EV 51, Valeton's model of the Peavey 5150 lead channel, or Mess DualV, based on the MESA/Boogie Dual Rectifier. EV 51: Gain 70, Bass 55, Middle 45, Treble 60, PRES 50. The default chain already puts NR, the noise reducer, after the amp, so turn it on. For tighter palm mutes, switch on 14 Boost in the DST module, which Valeton bases on the Fortin Grind and describes as a boost that tightens and adds aggression, and take the amp's Gain down a step.

Switch on 14 Boost in DST before you raise the Gain.

Lead

Keep the rhythm patch, raise Middle by about 10, and add delay in DLY and a little reverb in RVB. Set the footswitches to STOMP mode in GLOBAL, or hold the [+] footswitch, so a press turns a module on and off instead of changing patch. Holding [-] turns Tap Tempo on and off, for setting the delay time in time with the song.

Valeton GP-100 questions

What amps are in the Valeton GP-100?

Valeton lists 45 amp types for guitar, bass and acoustic. Its firmware 2.0 manual bases them on amps including the Fender Tweed Deluxe (Tweedy), '59 Bassman (Bellman 59N and 59B) and '65 Twin Reverb (Dark Twin), the VOX AC30HW (Foxy 30N and 30TB), the Marshall JTM45 (UK 45) and JMP50 (UK 50JP), the Matchless Chieftain (Match CL and OD), Dr. Z Maz 38 Sr. (Z38), Bogner Shiva (BogSV) and Ecstasy (Bog BlueV and RedM), Supro Dual-Tone (SUPDual OD), Soldano SLO100 (Solo100), MESA/Boogie Lone Star, Mark II C+, Mark IV and Dual Rectifier, Diezel VH4 (Dizz VH), ENGL Savage 120 and Powerball II, Peavey 5150 (EV 51) and Orange Rockerverb 100 (Juice R100). The bass models follow the Ampeg SVT and B-15, the Alembic F-2B, the VOX AC-100 and the MESA/Boogie Bass 400, and AC Pre follows the AER Colourizer 2 acoustic preamp.

How many effects can the GP-100 run at once?

Nine, one in each module: PRE, DST, AMP, NR, CAB, EQ, MOD, DLY and RVB. That is also the default order, and EDIT lets you move modules anywhere in the chain. Valeton lists more than 140 effects in all.

Should you use the GP-100's amp models with a guitar amp?

Into the front of a guitar amp, Valeton suggests turning off the AMP and CAB modules and using the GP-100 for effects. Into the amp's effects return, turn off only CAB. GLOBAL's No CAB Mode switches the CAB module off on the left or right output without editing every saved patch. For headphones, a PA or recording, leave both on.

Can you load your own IRs into the GP-100?

Yes. Alongside 40 factory cabinet IRs it has 20 slots for third-party IRs, loaded with Valeton's free GP-100 software for Windows and macOS.

How do you save a patch on the GP-100?

Press SAVE. A * on the screen means the patch has changed since it was stored, and an unsaved change is lost when you switch patch or turn the unit off. There are 99 user patches, P01 to P99, and 99 factory patches, F01 to F99. The master level and the drum machine settings are global, so they are not saved with a patch.

Can the GP-100 be used as an audio interface?

Yes, over its USB 2.0 Type-B port, to a computer or, with an OTG cable, a phone. It is plug and play on macOS; on Windows it needs Valeton's ASIO driver. The Global EQ does not affect the USB output.

What are the best Valeton GP-100 settings for metal?

Start with EV 51, Gain 70, Bass 55, Middle 45, Treble 60 and PRES 50, with NR on after the amp and 14 Boost in DST. These are starting points rather than Valeton's numbers. If it fizzes, lower Gain first and Treble second.

How do you build a patch on the Valeton GP-100?

Pick the amp model first, then set its controls, then add the blocks in signal-chain order: drive before the amp, time and modulation after it. A patch built the other way around ends up compensating for the wrong stage. Tonelify returns the model, the order and the parameters together.

Does Tonelify support the Valeton GP-100?

Yes. Name it in the tone matcher along with the song you are chasing and the settings come back adapted to it. Gear does not need to be in the catalog for a match to run.
