Valeton GP-50 presets and settings

Stompbox-sized unit with two footswitches, a colour screen and a built-in battery. Nine modules at once from 32 amp models and over 100 effects, plus a loader for NAM captures and cabinet IRs.

⚡ Match a tone on this gear

How do you dial in a specific tone on a Valeton GP-50?

A multi-effects unit gives you the whole chain in one box, which means the order of the blocks is as much of the answer as the values inside them. Settings for the Valeton GP-50 name the amp model, the block order and the parameters together, rather than handing you numbers with no chain to put them in.

Name the song you are chasing and Tonelify returns the settings for this exact multi-effects unit, not the settings the original artist used. Those are two different things: the recording was made on gear most players do not own.

Starting settings on the Valeton GP-50

Values as the unit's screen shows them, on its own scale; each drawn knob shows that value's share of the range. They are where to begin, not Valeton's numbers: pick the amp model first, then move one control at a time from here.

Clean

Dark Twin, which Valeton bases on the Fender '65 Twin Reverb. Gain 30, Bass 50, Middle 50, Treble 60, Bright off. Valeton describes Gain as the pre gain and VOL as the post gain, so set the loudness with VOL and keep Gain low. J-120 CL, based on the Jazz Chorus, is the other big clean; it has a VOL control and no Gain.

Edge of breakup and blues

Foxy 30TB, Valeton's model of the VOX AC30HW's Top Boost channel. Gain 45, Bass 50, Treble 55, Tone cut 30, Char on Cool. It has Bass and Treble but no Middle, a Tone cut control, and Char, which picks between two characters: Cool, with lower gain, and Hot, with higher gain. Tweedy, based on the Fender Tweed Deluxe, is simpler still, with only Gain, Tone and VOL, and Bellman 59B is the Bright channel of a '59 Bassman.

Classic rock

UK 45, based on the Marshall JTM45's normal channel, or UK 800, the Marshall JCM800. UK 45: Gain 60, Bass 50, Middle 65, Treble 60, PRES 50. Keep the mids up: rock guitar sits in the midrange, and scooping it is the usual reason a patch sounds thin next to a band. UK 50JP, the JMP50 with its inputs jumped, has two Gain controls, Gain 1 and Gain 2.

Metal

EV 51, Valeton's model of the Peavey 5150's Lead channel, or Mess DualM, channel 3 of a Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier in Modern mode. EV 51: Gain 70, Bass 55, Middle 45, Treble 60, PRES 50. Turn on NR, which sits first in the default chain: its Gate is based on the ISP Decimator and has one control, THRE, for the level it opens at. For tighter palm mutes, put Green OD, Valeton's model of the Ibanez TS-808, in DST before the amp with its Gain low, and take the amp's Gain down a step.

Lead

Hold footswitch B to change from Patch Mode to Pedal Mode: the two footswitches then turn modules on and off instead of changing patch. Each footswitch can control up to three modules, so put DST and DLY on one of them and a boost with an echo is one press. Holding footswitch A on the main screen opens Tap Tempo, which sets the delay time from your taps.

Valeton GP-50 amp list

The AMP module has 32 models: 27 guitar amps, 3 bass amps and 2 acoustic preamps. Each row gives the amp Valeton names as the basis, in the effect list's order. Where the list's own entry is unclear, the row says so rather than guessing.

From Valeton's GP-50 Effect List, firmware V1.1.0. Valeton uses the brand names only to identify the sound.

Valeton GP-50 questions

What amps are in the Valeton GP-50?

32 in the AMP module: 27 guitar amps, 3 bass amps and 2 acoustic preamps. Valeton's effect list bases them on amps including the Fender Tweed Deluxe (Tweedy), '59 Bassman (Bellman 59N and 59B) and '65 Twin Reverb (Dark Twin), the VOX AC30HW (Foxy 30N and 30TB), the Marshall JTM45 (UK 45), JMP50 (UK 50JP) and JCM800 (UK 800), the Matchless Chieftain (Match CL), the Mesa/Boogie Lone Star (L-Star CL) and Dual Rectifier (Mess DualV and DualM), the Supro Dual-Tone (SUPDual OD), Soldano SLO100 (Solo100 OD and LD), Dr. Z Maz 38 Sr. (Z38 OD), Bad Cat Hot Cat 30 (Bad-KT OD), Orange Rockerverb 100 (Juice R100), Diezel VH4 (Dizz VH and VH+), ENGL Savage 120 (Eagle 120) and Powerball II (Power LD), Peavey 5150 (EV 51) and Bogner XTC (Bog RedV). On top of these come 50 factory SnapTone files, captures of further amps and pedals.

What is SnapTone on the GP-50?

Valeton's format for NAM (Neural Amp Modeler) captures. The SnapTone module, shown as N→S on the screen, loads a file converted from a NAM file; the GP-50 comes with 50 and stores up to 80. While it is on, the AMP and CAB modules are switched off. NAM files are imported with the Valeton Suite app over the unit's built-in wireless connection.

How many effects can the GP-50 run at once?

Nine. It has ten modules, NR, PRE, DST, SnapTone (N→S), AMP, CAB, EQ, MOD, DLY and RVB, and turning on SnapTone turns off AMP and CAB. NR, PRE, MOD, DLY and RVB can be moved in the chain by holding the PARA knob; the other five stay where they are. Valeton counts over 100 effects in all.

Should you use the GP-50's amp models with a guitar amp?

Into the front of a guitar amp, Valeton says to keep the AMP and CAB modules off. In the amp's effects loop, between its send and return, it recommends using only EQ, MOD, DLY and RVB, again with AMP and CAB off. Into the amp's return alone, the GP-50's AMP module does the preamp's job: keep CAB off, or turn on No CAB Mode, which bypasses the cabinet without altering the patch. Into headphones, an interface, monitors or a PA, keep AMP and CAB on and No CAB Mode off.

Can you load your own IRs into the GP-50?

Yes: 20 slots for third-party cabinet IRs, User IR 1 to 20 in the CAB module, loaded from the Valeton Suite app. Auto CAB Match, which pairs a cabinet to the amp model you choose, does not act while an IR is loaded.

How do you save a patch on the GP-50?

Press SAVE, choose the slot, then press SAVE or the PARA knob to confirm. An asterisk beside the patch number means there are unsaved changes, and they are lost if you change patch or turn the unit off. There are 100 patch slots, and the first 55, numbered 00 to 54, hold the factory patches; a factory reset can restore only those and leave the rest alone.

Does the Valeton GP-50 have a battery?

Yes, a built-in rechargeable one of 1450 mAh, charged through either the 9V DC jack or the USB-C port. The unit also runs from a 9V DC supply (500 mA, centre negative) or from USB at 5V and 1 A, such as a power bank. On battery power, hold GLOBAL and SAVE together to switch it on or off. Valeton's manual gives no running time.

How long is the looper on the GP-50?

20 seconds. Hold both footswitches for more than two seconds to open it. It can sit before the effects, where it records a dry mono signal, or after them, where it records the processed stereo sound. Valeton calls it an auxiliary tool: what you record is not saved.

Can the GP-50 be used as an audio interface?

Yes, over its USB-C port, with a computer or a phone. It also has built-in wireless, which Valeton lists as BT 5.0 for both control and audio, a headphone output, and MIDI in and thru on 1/8 inch jacks. The unit is 122 mm wide, 82 mm deep and 54 mm high, and weighs 430 g.

What are the best Valeton GP-50 settings for metal?

Start with EV 51, Gain 70, Bass 55, Middle 45, Treble 60 and PRES 50, with the NR gate on and Green OD in DST. These are starting points rather than Valeton's numbers. If it fizzes, lower Gain first and Treble second.

How do you build a patch on the Valeton GP-50?

Pick the amp model first, then set its controls, then add the blocks in signal-chain order: drive before the amp, time and modulation after it. A patch built the other way around ends up compensating for the wrong stage. Tonelify returns the model, the order and the parameters together.

Does Tonelify support the Valeton GP-50?

Yes. Name it in the tone matcher along with the song you are chasing and the settings come back adapted to it. Gear does not need to be in the catalog for a match to run.
